Chapter Twelve

Jesus, she was an idiot, Lily thought as she drove out of Wade’s yard and back to Charmaine’s. How in the hell could she have blurted out her secret after weeks of keeping it to herself?

And like that?

She had practically killed Wade with her slip of the tongue. She’d been mortified when he had choked on his sandwich. Lily had wished she could shove the words back into her mouth and swallow them down as soon as she said them. No wonder she had felt sick on the way back to the house. Acid rolled in her stomach as she thought back to that stupid moment.

The look on Wade’s face would forever be burned in her mind.

He was pissed at her, and hurt. And she couldn’t blame him. The passion simmering between them since the wedding hadn’t helped either. She had spent the last three weeks trying to fight the desire burning under her skin. She knew he was her biggest mistake. She just wasn’t sure which part. Leaving him to begin with, or being back close to him again.

She’d been consciously trying not to look him in the eye since the wedding. She wasn’t ready for the intimacy she knew he wanted. But today she couldn’t help herself. She knew he was everything she’d ever wanted. She felt comfortable with him. Safe. She hadn’t felt truly safe for a very long time. Today, out fixing that fence, far away from everyone else, she’d let her defenses slip. With dire consequences. She knew she should have told him about the baby ages ago. But somehow, whenever she had tried to, the words stuck in her throat. She cared about him and didn’t want to see him get hurt. Instead of protecting him though, she had hurt him more than if she had been honest to begin with.

She had tried to keep her distance from him, for her sake and his. She knew all too well what the gossips in town would say when they found out she was pregnant. Stupidly she thought that if she could distance herself from him, maybe they wouldn’t assume Wade was the father. Ha! Even Wade thought that was what she was up to.

She wished she could find a time machine and travel back to un-go to the wedding. And un-leave Bassville all those years ago.

Her hand touched her stomach. Well, maybe not. If she hadn’t left she wouldn’t be having this baby, and at this moment, her baby was all she had.

Grateful that she arrived at Charmaine’s, so she no longer had to think about the consequences of her messed up past, she climbed out of the truck and up the steps to the house.

“God, girl, you look exhausted,” Charmaine said as soon as Lily walked through the door.

Lily threw her backpack on the floor and crumpled onto the couch. “I am,” she moaned. Her forearms ached from hammering in the staples today, not to mention all the other physical work Wade had her doing for the last month.
